Understanding EMDR and AF-EMDR: A Path to Healing
Our Approach
Our counsellors are trained Members of EMDRAA (EMDR Association of Australia). We work collaboratively with you to ensure you feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout the therapeutic process.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity and psychological impact.
Key Benefits of EMDR
- Effectively treats post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Reduces anxiety and depression associated with traumatic memories
- Helps process complex emotional experiences
- Creates lasting changes in how traumatic memories are stored and experienced
- Can provide relief in fewer sessions compared to traditional therapies
What is AF-EMDR?
Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) builds upon traditional EMDR by specifically addressing attachment wounds and developmental trauma. This approach recognises how early relationship experiences shape our emotional responses and healing potential.
Unique Aspects of AF-EMDR
- Focuses on healing early childhood attachment injuries
- Addresses intergenerational trauma patterns
- Supports individuals in developing secure attachment styles
- Provides deeper emotional healing beyond single traumatic incidents
- Helps rebuild internal resources and emotional resilience
Who Can Benefit?
EMDR and AF-EMDR can support individuals experiencing:
- Complex trauma
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Relationship difficulties
