What do we discuss in the Free Welcome Call?

This call is obligation free and last about 20minutes and exploring your reasons for seeking support. This meeting also gives you the opportunity to determine if you feel comfortable with your counsellor and to ask any questions you might have. At the end of this session, you can book a session if you like or go away and contact us later if you prefer.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Our current waiting time for new clients is typically 1-2 weeks, though this varies throughout the year. If you’re in urgent need of support, please let us know when contacting us, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you sooner. For immediate crisis support, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Do I need a doctor’s referral before seeing a counsellor?

No, you do not need to see a doctor before booking with us, as our counsellors are not registered Medicare providers. This can be an advantage for many clients, as our sessions remain completely confidential with no information shared through Medicare systems. This confidentiality provides a discrete service that many professionals in sensitive positions particularly value.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps heal trauma by changing how your brain stores difficult memories. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to process traumatic experiences, often providing relief from PTSD, anxiety, and other trauma-related conditions in fewer sessions than conventional therapies.

Where can I find information about EMDR therapy fees?

For up-to-date EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy fees and additional information about this specialised treatment, please refer to the bottom of our EMDR Therapy page on this website. There you’ll find current pricing, session duration details, and other relevant information to help you make an informed decision about this treatment option.

Are private health insurance rebates available for counselling sessions?

Yes, our counsellors aim to offer private health insurance rebates to help reduce the costs of our services. The availability and amount of rebates depend on your specific insurance provider and level of cover. Please mention your health insurance provider during your free welcome call, and we’ll be happy to discuss potential rebates and how to claim them for your sessions.

How do you assess mental health needs?

Our experienced counsellors conduct comprehensive mental health assessments during initial consultations. We evaluate your specific needs, concerns, and goals to determine the most appropriate support. If we identify that you would benefit from specialised medical or psychiatric care, we maintain a network of trusted healthcare providers for referrals.

Do you offer telehealth/online counselling options?

Yes, we offer secure video counselling sessions for clients who prefer this option due to distance, scheduling, or personal preference. Our online sessions provide the same quality of care as in-person appointments and use encrypted platforms to ensure your privacy and confidentiality.

What are the benefits of online therapy?

Online therapy offers several unique advantages:
Convenience: Access professional support from the comfort of your home, eliminating travel time and transportation barriers.
Flexibility: Easier scheduling around work, family, or other commitments.
Accessibility: Available to clients in remote areas or those with mobility challenges.
Comfort: Some clients find it easier to open up in their own familiar environment.
Continuity: Maintain your therapy schedule during travel, illness, or unexpected circumstances.
Privacy: Additional discretion without visiting a physical office.
Our secure platform ensures the same level of confidentiality as in-person sessions, and research shows online therapy can be just as effective for many concerns.

Is what I share in counselling confidential?

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of our practice. What you share remains private, with a few important exceptions: if there’s risk of harm to yourself or others, if information is subpoenaed by a court, or if there’s disclosure of child abuse or neglect (mandatory reporting applies). These limitations to confidentiality will be fully explained during your first session. As we aren’t Medicare providers, your information isn’t shared through government healthcare systems, offering additional privacy for professionals in sensitive positions.

What’s the difference between counselling and psychology services?

Counsellors focus on talking therapies to help you work through current challenges, develop coping strategies, and improve wellbeing. Psychologists have different training and can provide clinical assessments, diagnoses, and psychological testing.
While there’s overlap in the support offered, counselling services are generally more accessible without the need for a referral and often more affordable. Our counsellors are qualified professionals committed to ethical practice and ongoing professional development.

What qualifications do your counsellors have?

All our counsellors hold relevant tertiary qualifications in counselling, psychology, social work, or related fields. Many have additional specialised training in areas such as trauma, relationships, working with children, or specific therapeutic modalities like EMDR.
Our counsellors are members of professional bodies such as the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), Australian Counselling Association (ACA), and EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA) and adhere to their ethical frameworks and engaging in regular supervision and professional development.

What’s your cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or missed appointments without adequate notice will incur full fee of the session cost, depending on the circumstances. We understand that emergencies happen and will always try to be reasonable in unexpected situations. To help you manage your appointments we send a 48hr confirmation text to confirm your appointment and for you to reply with Yes or No.

Do you offer EMDR in face-to-face sessions?

Yes, we have a location for face-to-face EMDR sessions available on Fridays at our South Fremantle location. All other sessions times are available as secure online video calls.
